FRENCH POINEER IS SUMMONED BY DEATH
Francois Xavier Drouillard Carried Musket When “Inhumane Ruffians Invaded Windsor”
Francis Xavier Drouillard, the oldest surviving member of one of the oldest French families in western Ontario died Monday afternoon at his home above Walkerville, following a short illness. About two weeks ago he was stricken with paralysis and although the stroke was light, his condition gradually became more serious.
Mr. Drouillard was a lifelong resident of Sandwich East. He was born on Feb 18, 1823 at the Drouillard homestead above Walkerville where he died. In early life he followed the business of a contractor and builder and was employed by the Walkers as foreman when the buildings of the Walkerville distillery were erected about 1860.
One of his reminiscences had to do with the part he played in the border warfare in 1838. At that time he was only a boy of fifteen, but owing to the illness of his father, he had to take the part of a man and carried a musket for some time. He remembered Detroit as a very small town and used to tell of working near the present ferry dock for 12 cents a day.
The Drouillard family was founded in this country about 1748-1750 and by marriage became closely allied with the Pratt and Labadie families. The father of desceased, who was also called Francois Xavier, was born in 1784 in Detroit and was employed to carry the mail from Windsor to Chatham which he had to do on horseback and on foot for several years through the woods.
The surviving family of deceased includes three sons and four daughters. Albert Drouillard customs officer in Windsor, Eugene and George Drouillard, Walkerville, Mrs. Jacob Heck, Sandwich East, Mrs. Clare Deming, Cleveland, Mrs. Albert Ellis, Walkerville, and Mrs. J. Clark, Wyoming.
